What is a Telegrammer and why should you join?
-
Historically, a telegram was a message transmitted by telegraph and then printed and delivered. At theater productions across the world, you are able to purchase, create, and send written messages to performers in a show.
-
OCCT expounded on this concept and created our ‘telegrammer program’, where the youngest members of our company are the ones who deliver these special messages backstage! It’s a time-honored tradition, and one that we are proud to continue in our theater.
-
Our telegrammers are our youngest cast members (ages 5-8+) and perform in their own two unique numbers at each Main Stage production.
-
They rehearse Monday evenings and Saturday mornings for one hour.
-
The purpose of our telegrammer program is to expose younger children to the art of live theater, train them in simple song and dance, and give them the opportunity to foster community and teamwork through the process of rehearsals, tech week, and performances.
-
Parent volunteers are highly important, and telegrammer parents are required to volunteer during pre-show, tech, and show days - the same as the ‘big’ cast!
-
In our telegrammer program, we aim to prepare the kids as they grow so that when they are of age to join the ‘big’ cast - they already have a leg up to be a kind, responsible, and successful cast member!
